The recent trials and tribulations of the Labour Party have now seen the Conservatives become favourites to win the next General Election for the first time since Gordon Brown came to power. Hills now make the Conservatives 8/11 favourites with Labour Even money and the Lib Dems 66/1.

'Labour's fortunes have taken a turn for the worse since Gordon Brown decided not to call a General Election and they are now no longer favourites to win the next one' said Hill's spokesman Graham Sharpe. Hills offer 10/11 that the next General Election will take place between January and June (inclusive) 2009.

William Hill have also cut the odds about Alistair Darling ceasing to be Chancellor before the end of this year from 4/1 to 3/1 after further backing for the beleaguered Minister to lose his job.

Hills have also lengthened the odds Mr Darling, or equally under-pressure Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, becoming the next leader of the Labour Party , from 14/1 to 25/1.
'Neither Mr Darling nor Ms Smith seem to have enhanced their reputations in recent weeks' said Graham Sharpe, spokesman for William Hill.

Hills now make David Miliband 5/4 favourite to be the next Labour Leader and also offer 6/1 Douglas Alexander; 8/1 Hilary Benn; 10/1 Ed Balls; 12/1 Ed Miliband; 14/1Alan Johnson; Jack Straw; 16/1 Ruth Kelly; Harriet Harman; 25 Darling; Smith.
