The FA has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with
Betfair, the market-leading betting exchange, to monitor football betting with the aim of ensuring the
continued integrity of English football.
The FA is the governing body of football in England,
responsible for maintaining the highest standards across the sport. As football betting continues to grow in
popularity, this partnership represents an important step to reinforce English professional football's
international reputation for excellence and honesty.
As the market-leading betting exchange,
Betfair are uniquely placed to monitor the football-betting market, to assist The FA.
The terms of
the agreement allow The FA to access a greater level of information than they have previously been able to
get from the betting industry. Specifically, The FA will be able to request information, which will
identify individuals behind any activity, which has given rise to strong suspicion that corruption may have
taken place.
Betfair's CEO Stephen Hill, said:
"We are delighted to be able to add this
agreement to those we already have with the governing bodies of sport. Working closely with sporting
regulators, and allowing them access to the information we have, is the best way to ensure that sport is kept
free of crime. Betfair has no vested interest in the outcome of any event and our interests are absolutely in
line with those who run the events. This is good news for the integrity of sport."
The FA's Chief
Executive, Mark Palios, said "The FA is committed to upholding the core principle that drives football as a
competitive sport - that participants must always have winning as their sole aim, within the laws of the
game. This agreement helps us to maintain English football's well-deserved reputation for
integrity."
The agreement will operate in a similar manner to those previously agreed by
Betfair with the Jockey Club, the International Cricket Council and the Association of Tennis Professionals
and will come into operation with immediate effect.
