It's a case of the Premiership revisited as far as bookmaker Victor
Chandler's Euro 2004 'Top Scorer' market is concerned with rivals Thierry Henry 11/2 and
Ruud Van Nistelrooy 13/2 heading the outright betting.
Premiership top scorer,
Henry, will team up with David Trezeguet 10/1 to spearhead a French side (3/1 outright) that
many are tipping to go the distance in Portugal this summer. If Les Bleus do make progress it will give Henry
more matches than most to boost his goal tally.
The Arsenal hit man scored an impressive six goals
in seven qualifiers for his country and will be looking to maintain that scoring run against Group B
opponents England, Switzerland and Croatia.
Manchester United striker, Van Nistelrooy, coveted by
Real Madrid among many others, signed off his nation's qualifying campaign with a play-off hat-trick against
Scotland.
But unlike Henry, Van Nistelrooy's team aren't as strongly fancied to progress as far
in the tournament. The Dutch are currently trading at 15/2 with some respected football judges expecting them
to struggle to qualify from a Group D that contains the Czech Republic, Germany and
Latvia.
Italy's Christian Vieri 8/1 is another man Chandler fancy to feature
highly. The Inter striker may now be the wrong side of 30 but is still widely recognised as one of the best
strikers in Europe - a fact that was backed up this season by Chelsea's willingness to part with 22 million
to acquire his services.
If Chandler's 9/2 quote about Italy is anything to go by we can expect to
see Vieri's muscular style causing concern for defences beyond the group phase.
Portugal's well
travelled striker Pauleta is 9/1 to win the Euro 2004 Gold Boot. The 31-year-old currently
plies his trade with Paris St Germain but boasts a CV with names such as Deportivo La Coruna and Bordeaux and
has been named as French Footballer of the Year on two occasions.
His three goals in the 2002 World
Cup mark him out as a man capable of scoring at the highest international level and with the massive support
of the Portuguese nation behind him more goals are anticipated.
