Luton take on Tranmere at Kenilworth road tonight in what promises to be an entertaining encounter.

Neither side has managed to live up to the expectations that were placed on them preseason, so an upturn in fortunes will be expected by both sets of supporters.

Tranmere looked to be in with a great chance of success on the eve of the new season – a run of 15 games without defeat at the end of last season nearly saw Rovers come so close to a play-off place. Now John McMahon’s men are just a couple of spots clear of the relegation zone, and have won just once since the opening day defeat of Brentford.

The story is very similar for Luton, who have managed to win just four times this season. The good news for Hatter’s fans however, is that Tranmere are yet to win on the road, while three of Luton’s four wins have come in front of the home faithful. A home win looks the most likely result, but with a best price 10/11, I wont be backing that.

While Luton should win, there has been such an inconsistent element to their performances this season that I am wary of taking such a short price, even against a struggling side. We should also remember the Tranmere of last season and ask ourselves whether so much has really changed from the side that ended last season so well. My answer would be no, so I won’t be opposing Rovers this week,

Instead, there is a decent chance of Gary McSheffrey getting on the scoresheet, as he has done in six of his last eight games. The youngster has really found himself this season since moving on-loan from Coventry and he is finding that the combination of dropping down a division and the benefit of an extra year behind him have been just the tonic to increase his scoring record.

After six goals lately, McSheffrey is surely too long at 6/4 to net against a side who have been unable to hold their defence together for long enough to start winning games. Take Bet365’s offer of 6/4 is the advice, but be sure to check out Betfair as well – McSheffery is available at 11/5 with the exchange at time of writing, and that looks huge to me.
