A look at the averages of batsman from both teams shows the Sri Lankans as far superior. A number of the tourists are averaging 40 plus, including Jayasuriya (41), Jayawardene (50), De Silva (40), Sangakkara (53). Meanwhile, Graham Thorpe is the only English batsman that compares favourably with the tourists.
Mahela Jayawardene is currently on a roll and is staking a claim as one of the World’s leading batsman. Aravinda De Silva, who has a vast amount of experience in English conditions having previously toured with Sri Lanka and enjoyed a highly successful season on the County circuit with Kent back in 1995.
In English conditions De Silva could well be the batsman to trust your money with during the Series. The reason being the majority of the tourists love to go after the bowlers, which is not always the best way to bat in England. De Silva on the other hand is a more solid player and has a proven record in this country. The former captain is expected to score 160-175 runs according to the Spread Betting firms.
The English selectors decision to recall John Crawley has been met with some derision in the Media. Having invested so much money in sending the best young crickets to Australia in the winter, it seems a little strange that only Alex Tudor is given the chance to shine.
However, the decision has been made and John Crawley is certainly keen to impress on his return. Crawley believes he is in the prime of his career and wants to make the most of his unexpected opportunity.

Mark Butcher showed last year what can be achieved after spending some time in the International wilderness. Having been recalled to the Test side, the Surrey left-hander grabbed his opportunity by scoring a match-winning ton against the Australians. John Crawley and Dominic Cork will be hoping for something similar in the first Test at Lords. Both players should be confident of doing well as they have both been in great form of their counties. It would not be the greatest of surprises if John Crawley re-established himself in the team with a decent innings and Dominic Cork was to utilise the probable friendly bowling conditions to his benefit.
As for betting on the Series result, the best price of evens for an England team that has not won for a couple of series does not inspire confidence. Add in the fact that Sri Lanka are currently enjoying their best run of form ever and backing the hosts looks far too risky. There is an argument to suggest that weather conditions will benefit England in the early part of the Series. However, unlike touring sides in the past couple of year, Sri Lanka have had more of an opportunity to acclimatise to the conditions. The visitors also have players who can excel in English conditions.
One of these players is Chaminda Vaas who will take wickets whatever the environment happens to be. If the ball happens to be moving around, this will only add to the effectiveness of the left armer. In the absence of Muralitharan, Vaas can expect to be given plenty of opportunity to take wickets. A buy of his IG quote of 12-13 wickets should produce a profit. A repeat of course of his last performance against England and a win would be guaranteed |
