Arsenal play Juventus on Wednesday evening with the knowledge of knowing they can still qualify for the quarterfinals. That is only if they match what Bayern Leverkusen achieve at Deportivo (who have already qualified) – unless the Germans win. That would end Arsenal’s hopes, even if they do come away from Italy with maximum points.
Arsene Wenger can though take comfort knowing that Deportivo will be playing to avoid a possible meeting with Real Madrid in the quarterfinals. The Spaniards have made it known that they will be motivated enough to secure a point against Bayern Leverkusen. The German team have not travelled well so far in the second phase of the Champions League.
Juventus have nothing to play. Marcello Lippi is likely to field anything but a full-strength team on Wednesday evening. Even if the circumstances were different, Juventus would still be without the services of Thuram and Montero.
Winning away from home in Europe has been a struggle for Arsenal for a couple of seasons now. This record is all the more baffling as the Gunners are yet to lose domestically away from Highbury this season. Their latest domestic away day triumph came at Villa Park on Sunday. That win will have restored any confidence lost from last week’s disaster at home to Deportivo.

2pts Arsenal to beat Juventus at 6/4
The fact that Juventus cannot qualify steers me to an Arsenal win. Despite not winning in Europe this season, the away from domestically is awesome. Arsene Wenger probably realised sometime ago that in order for his team to progress - it would be necessary to win away some time. That time has now come. |
